Grenada Distillers partners with WIRSPA & WSET to offer 5 Level 1 Award in Spirits courses to Grenadian bartenders.
Monday 29th June, 2020, St. George’s: Grenada Distillers producer of Clarke’s Court Rum has announced that through a partnership with West Indies Rum and Spirits Producers Association (WIRSPA) and the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), it is offering support to bartenders hit by the disruption caused by the current COVID-19 crisis. Five Grenadian bartenders are being given the opportunity to increase their industry knowledge and skills through the WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits online course.
The online course will run for a four-week period. During the 4-week course, candidates will have access to the Study Guide, along with a range of independent and/or group activities supported by videos and quizzes designed to achieve the required learning outcomes.
The WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits is intended for people who have little or no prior knowledge of spirits. It is designed to provide a sound but simple introduction to spirits. The qualification will assist those who need a basic familiarity with the main styles and categories of spirits, for example people who work with spirits as part of a larger beverage portfolio, in the retail and hospitality sectors.
Successful candidates will be able to list the principal spirits categories, state their defining characteristics, and know the key principles involved in the storage and service of spirits. They will consequently be in a position to answer customer queries and provide recommendations for spirits service.
Students will have access to a WSET-Certified Spirits Educator who will provide feedback on any assigned exercises and respond to course-related queries throughout the course. Participation on WSET online courses does not stipulate fixed times to log-on, so students can complete their learning at times that best suited to them.
Kellon Brathwaite (Juice), Bartender – 61 WEST, comments, “I feel elated to be chosen as a participant, this provides me with an opportunity to sharpen my craft”. Kirk Seetahal, Operations Manager Grenada Distillers Limited, added “As we experience this period of immense challenges in the Caribbean hospitality industry, Grenada Distillers producers of Grenada’s #1 rum remains committed to supporting the hardworking community of bartenders, bar staff and front-line workers across the country. This is why we are delighted to partner with WIRSPA and WSET on this initiative and keep everyone engaged, connected and positive.” Each student accepted onto the course will be expected to sit a final exam. Successful students will receive a certificate and WSET lapel pin badge. The course begins July 20th, 2020.
