Wednesday May
18th, 2011 - St. George’s
Grenada:
Adjudged a
World-Class Distillery once more and,
for the very first time, Distillery
of the Year, Grenada Distillers
Limited (GDL) brought home seven medals
which included three golds and three
silvers.
Once again,
Grenada Distillers Limited’s Clarke’s
Court Brand has scored excellent points
and gained Gold and Silver Awards at the
World Spirits Award competition, the
eighth edition of the top-quality award
ceremony and exhibition which took place
at the GAST in Klagenfurt from March 20
to 23 2011.
In a
ceremony at the well-known Nick’s Barrel
House on Friday April 29, 2011 managers
and staff were apprised of GDL’s
performance at the World Spirit Awards
competition by Chairman, Mr Leroy
Neckles, who commended the members of
staff of the distillery and production
departments, in particular, along with
their managers. Showing off the
certificates and medals, he stated that
all employees should be proud as it was
the team effort that resulted in the
Distillery obtaining the awards.
Grenada
Distillers Limited makes the Clarke’s
Court brand rum locally from imported
molasses, as enough sugar cane is no
longer cultivated in Grenada. Blenders
go through the process of carefully
crafting each of the twelve rums to
maintain the excellent quality for which
the distillery is renowned.
The Grenada
Sugar Factory commenced operation in
1937: there was the production of the
rum under the Tradewinds and Red Neck
brands. A few years later the original
Pure White rum was branded Clarke’s
Court.
In addition
to numerous other awards from various
competitions, Clarke’s Court products
have received Gold, Silver and Bronze
medals from World Spirit Awards in 2006,
2007, 2008, 2009, 2010.
70 participants from 33
nations competed for the “World Spirits
Award” 2011, with the presented products
ranging from coffee, cigars and brandies
to gin, rum, fruit spirits and 100%
distillates. The results are based on
the WOB 100-points grading system
tailored to spirits; objective
assessment is ensured by an
international taster jury with many
years of experience.
Distinctions are the
reflection of the distillers’ work and
an appreciation of perfect products.
Based on the slogan “Simply the best in
Spirits”, only the best products are
entered into the competition and receive
rave reviews from the strict jury.
An interesting fact: only
6 products were deemed to be defective
or too weak! An additional 13 products
were awarded the title of “Best in
Category”.
In addition, 35
distilleries have been classified in
various categories (ranging from fruit
distillates and grain spirits to rum);
21 of those were awarded the
“World-Class Distillery” distinction, 7
received the “Master-Class Distillery”
and 7 the “First-Class Distillery”
distinction.
The classification is not
only a means for distillers to assess
their current position on an
international scale, but it also entails
competitive advantages in connection
with dedicated marketing measures and
the support offered by “World Spirits”.
Awarded
Gold at the World Spirits Awards 2011
competition were Clarke’s Court Old
Grog, a five year aged rum; Clarke’s
Court Superior Light Rum, a rum for
those whose palates prefer a light rum;
and Spicy Rum, a robust rum that
captures the flavour of the spice isle;
while Rum Sorrel, which features the
indigenous flavour of the Caribbean
cranberry; Rum Lemon, which leaves one
with a citrus note; and, the only eight
year aged rum on the island, #37 Blend
Double Matured Rum, brought home Silver.
